The Point Newspaper

The Point is the only independent daily newspaper in Gambia, West Africa.

Pap Saine and Deyda Hydara established the newspaper the 16th of December 1991. The Point covers national and international news and promotes divergent issues on democracy and human rights.

The 16th of December 2004, Deyda Hydara was killed on his way home from The Point’s 13th anniversary. The murder is still unsolved.

Six Gambian journalists were in August 2009 convicted and sentenced two years jail for publishing a press statement in The Point and another Gambian newspaper Foroyaa. The statement was criticizing the investigation of the Deyda Hydara murder. Three of the journalists were from The Point Newspaper. The journalists were released a month later on Presidential pardon.

This is just one of many stories about the media situation in the country.
